Smoke & CO Detectors
Smoke & CO Detector Installation
Hardwired Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector Installation in Western Washington

Washington State law requires smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home โ and code requires new or remodeled homes to have hardwired, interconnected alarms with battery backup. Battery-only detectors are allowed in existing homes but hardwired units are far more reliable and give your whole household more warning time.
Short Stop Electrical LLC installs hardwired smoke detectors, combination smoke/CO detectors, and standalone carbon monoxide detectors throughout homes in Tacoma and Western Washington. We wire units to be interconnected โ when one alarm goes off, they all go off, giving everyone in your home maximum time to get out.
We handle placement per Washington State code and manufacturer requirements, and pull any required permits for hardwired alarm installation.

Frequently asked questions
How many smoke detectors does my home need?
Washington State requires at least one on every level, one outside each sleeping area, and one inside each bedroom. For a two-story home with three bedrooms, you typically need at minimum 6โ8 detectors. We'll lay out the proper placement for your floor plan.
Are hardwired smoke detectors better than battery-only?
Yes. Hardwired units with battery backup are more reliable (no dead battery surprises), can be interconnected so all alarms sound at once, and are required in new construction and substantial remodels under Washington code. Battery-only units are legal in existing homes but don't offer the same protection.
Do I need separate CO detectors or combo units?
Combination smoke/CO units are convenient and code-compliant. Washington requires CO detectors outside each sleeping area in homes with fuel-burning appliances (furnace, water heater, range, fireplace) or attached garages. We can install dedicated CO detectors or combination units depending on your preference.
